12 June 2023: Giggleswick School year 12 biologists at Lower Winskill Farm - 30 days wild

The sixth formers at Giggleswick school have several field work days each year and for several years I have helped them when they have an ecology day at Tom Lord's Farm. He gives them a talk about current farming issues.

Monday the 12th June turned out to be even hotter than the previous day -Sunday (which had been the hottest day of the year so far). We were glad to do some of the work in Tom's white painted workroom.

They collected ten out of a possible 12+ species of grass in Tom's Meadow, then went indoors and made a chart with the plants mounted on card, labelled, and covered with sticky back plastic. Then we did the same for ten herbs.

After lunch we went out and recorded the abundance of each species of grass and herb in half meter quadrats placed at random points in a 20 by 20 m square in one habitat - Tom's nearest hay meadow, then the same process in a pasture area.

Swatting clegs  (horse-flies) that kept attacking us in the absence of horses.
